Wage: $25/hour
Hours: 18–20 hours per week. Flexible scheduling in consultation with the Directors. Some evenings and weekends required.
Position Overview
The Virtual Exhibition Residency is a residency position designed to support the growth of Indigenous leadership in digital arts documentation and virtual exhibition development. This residency provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in immersive media, 3D technology, and virtual arts programming while contributing to increased accessibility for remote and northern communities.
Working closely with Urban Shaman’s Artistic Director and technical team, the resident artist will participate in all aspects of our virtual exhibition programming. This includes the development of 360-degree exhibition tours, 3D scanning of artworks and gallery spaces, augmented reality (AR) integration for didactic materials, livestream production for public programming, and database archiving.
Building on these skills, the resident will also curate their own fully virtual exhibition centering on their own new media practice. This exhibition will be supported by mentorship, Indigenous language translation assistance, and the production of a digital catalogue and archive hosted on our website.
Key Responsibilities
– Participate in the development and production of 360-degree virtual tours of exhibitions
– Support 3D scanning and documentation of sculptural work and gallery installations
– Assist in livestream production and digital outreach for public programming
– Design and implement augmented reality content for exhibition didactics
– Shadow and contribute to Urban Shaman’s ongoing virtual programming
– Curate and present a fully virtual exhibition, including digital cataloguing
– Integrate and archive exhibition materials into Urban Shaman’s internal systems
Qualifications
– An active digital media practice (digital drawing, 3D modelling, computing, interactive video, or similar new media practices)
– Graphic design and social media outreach experience (e.g., blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
– Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work both collaboratively and independently
– Self-motivated, organized, and tech-savvy
Assets
– Proficient in digital design software (Adobe Creative Suite required; Blender, 3ds Max, or other 3D software is an asset)
– Experience with WordPress and basic web design an asset
Eligibility (DS4Y Program Requirements):
– Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the position
– Be legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee status)
– Self-identify as underemployed (e.g., part-time work, working below level of education, or emerging field with limited employment)
– Have completed post-secondary education (exemption for applicants in Yukon, NWT, or Nunavut)
– Not be an immediate family member of Urban Shaman staff or board
