Urban Art Biz | Cuzzin’ Nations: Global Indigeneity in the Arts on Turtle Island
Join us for Season 5 Episode 1 of Urban Art Biz as we open a dialogue with Indigenous artists who have roots on other continents and learn about their experience working in the arts sector of Manitoba. Presented in Partnership with Urban Shaman Gallery.
With special guests: Albyn Carias, Maribeth Manalaysay Tabanera AKA Kilusan, and Jonathan Ventura

What does reclaiming Indigeniety look like when you’re not on your homeland? Looking towards First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities often provides a connection to one’s own traditional ways and a guide towards decolonization while on this land. Because of this, we refer to our Indigenous relatives as ‘Cuzzin’ Nations’ because we recognize the interconnectedness of all Indigenous people globally and the things we share – from shared history and experiences of colonization, spiritual and land-based ways, to historic relationships in trade and kinship.
For Cuzzins working in the arts, this often means connecting with Indigenous arts organizations in Manitoba. What is this experience like? How are their projects received and supported? How can Indigenous organizations better include nations from other continents? As the art sector continues to navigate issues around Indigenous identity, including identity fraud and the need to develop robust identity policies, we must include our Cuzzin’ Nations in these conversations. In this episode, we will hear from a few Cuzzins who have been working in the arts sector, supporting indigenous organizations and projects and how they see cross-border kinship in the arts.
