Urban Shaman is seeking a GALLERY DIRECTOR
The Gallery Director oversees all facets of the organization’s activities. Reporting to the Urban Shaman Board of Directors, the Gallery Director is responsible for the administration, human resource, policy and programming initiatives of the organization. Responsibilities

  • Manage and administer the affairs of the gallery, to include supervision of staff and volunteers.
  • Manage human resources in an ethical and respectful fashion.
  • Manage all exhibitions and associated events.
  • Provide critical writing as appropriate.
  • Cultivate long term relationships with the Aboriginal community, general community, funders, membership and other arts organizations.
  • researching and writing all operating and project grants.
  • identify and cultivate new funding opportunities.
  • leading the curatorial process, in conjunction with the Programming Committee.
  • general office management activities including correspondence with members, Board, funders.
  • manage, in conjunction with staff all aspects of event/exhibition activities including logistics, installation, artist relations, health/safety, audience development and public relations.
  • manage,  activities related to media screenings, literary and music events, and performance festivals.
  • formulating community outreach strategies and organizing workshops, lectures and related programs.
  • developing and revising annual projected budgets under the guidance of the URBAN SHAMAN Board.
  • maintaining accurate financial records and preparing monthly budgetary reports.
  • managing financial aspects of all grant applications, including special project funding.
  • assisting with both the development and implementation of fundraising
  • coordinating membership activities in conjunction with the Program Coordinator and appropriate committee.
  • networking and liaising with advocacy groups locally, provincially, and nationally.
  • responsible for the preparation of an annual budget for presentation to, and approval of, the Board of Directors.
  • attends Board meetings in an advisory capacity and ensures that decisions of the Board are carried out and communicated as requested.
  • undertakes research, writing and analysis to support the preparation of policy development and makes policy recommendations to the Board.
  • ensures that legal, contractual and other obligations of the Gallery are met.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years experience working directly with the aboriginal arts community with a relevant bachelor’s degree, or combined education and experience.
  • knowledge of contemporary Aboriginal cultural practices on a local, national and international level.
  • excellent organizational and written skills.
  • demonstrated experience working with budgets and writing government and foundation grants is required.
  • effective interpersonal skills and ability to work in partnership with the URBAN SHAMAN Board, artists and community members.
  • dedicated interest in and/or experience working with artist-run-centres or not-for-profit groups (experience within an Aboriginal specific organization considered an asset).
  • strong working knowledge of various Mac applications (word, spreadsheets, graphics, web).
  • strong interpersonal and cultural skills relevant to Aboriginal communities a definite asset.

Remuneration/salary range:
Salary: $31,000 per annum
